Soundscape

  1. I'm not sure what the emotion for this soundscape was but the excellent use of space really stood out to me. At the beginning of the soundscape, the running water reinforces the outdoor, limited space environment. The footsteps are not really linked to the water, but they do fit in with the outdoor setting of the image. The second image, which is deep space, introduces the sound of a man coughing. The cough has a low pitch and reverb. The reverb applied to the coughing effect creates a feeling of being in a very large, open area. The heartbeat is also a low pitch with reverb which creates a feeling of deep space. After returning to the original image, the soundscape begins to incorporate the use of panning to create a sense of depth and movement. At 53 seconds, we hear a creaky door open and close in the right speaker after the footsteps stop. At about one minute and twenty seconds into the soundscape, we hear the sound of a thunderstorm. The low pitch, high reverb and echo sounds fit very well with the outdoor environment. The Gestalt Principle of Illusion is used in this soundscape during the sequence when we hear footsteps followed by the sound of a door. When combined, these separate sounds create the mental image of a person walking up to a door and stepping inside.
